If you are one of the people who give up classic coffee with caffeine due to health problems, pregnancy or other reasons , decaffeinated coffee beans are the ideal choice for you. It accounts for about 10% of total world coffee consumption.
Procedures for removing caffeine from coffee
There are currently two basic processes that remove caffeine from coffee beans, both of which remove up to 97% of the caffeine . So if you prepare a cup of decaffeinated coffee beans (250ml) it will contain from 2-12 mg of caffeine. A cup of classic coffee contains approximately 100 mg or more of caffeine.

The first method is the removal of caffeine using organic solvents . The green coffee bean is steamed for the purpose of half-opening, thanks to which a solvent can penetrate, which binds caffeine to itself. The grain is then separated from the caffeine-bound solvent. The grain is further steamed again several times until the last traces of solvents are removed.
According to many, this method of making decaffeinated coffee has the advantage that it does not significantly affect the taste. The disadvantage may be the risk of the presence of chemicals.

The second and more expensive method for decaffeinated coffee is the Swiss water process . Instead of organic solvents, hot water and steam are used. In it, coffee beans are soaked and rinsed so that they are opened and caffeine leached. Unfortunately, there is also a partial elimination of fragrances. Caffeine is removed from the water using activated carbon filters. The grains are then dried. After the caffeine has been removed, the water containing caffeine and fragrances is evaporated and reduced to a concentrate, which is then sprayed onto the grains in order to recover the lost substances, with the exception of caffeine.
The advantage of this method of decaffeinated coffee preparation is the non-use of solvents. The disadvantage may be that the resulting taste is affected due to the exclusion of some fragrances during the decaffeination process.
